NAIROBI, Kenya- A widespread power outage plunged large parts of Kenya into darkness on Wednesday night, disrupting homes, businesses and essential services across the country.
The blackout, which affected multiple regions simultaneously, prompted concern among Kenyans, many of whom took to social media to report loss of electricity in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, Kisumu and other counties.
In a brief statement, the Kenya Power and Lighting Company confirmed the outage, attributing it to a system disturbance.
“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that we are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting customers in Nairobi, Coast, Mt. Kenya and parts of Central Rift. However, parts of North Rift and Western regions are on supply,” the company said.
The disruption also affected internet connectivity in parts of the country.
As restoration efforts continued, Kenya Power urged customers to remain patient while engineers worked with other energy sector players to restore electricity supply.
