NAIROBI, Kenya — Calm has been restored in Kikuyu town after a chaotic early morning incident in which suspected goons barricaded sections of the Southern Bypass, disrupting traffic and sparking panic among residents.
Witnesses said the attackers lit bonfires using tyres along key sections of the highway, bringing movement to a standstill and leaving motorists stranded for hours.
The situation quickly escalated as criminal elements reportedly took advantage of the gridlock to rob unsuspecting pedestrians and drivers.
Security agencies swiftly moved in, dispersing the groups and clearing the road, paving the way for the resumption of normal activities.
Police presence has since been heightened in the area to prevent further incidents.
Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah confirmed that order had been restored, crediting security officers for their rapid response in containing the unrest.
The lawmaker linked the disruption to political tensions ahead of a planned rally by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, alleging that the chaos may have been orchestrated to create instability.
He however did not provide any evidence. The goons were seen walking freely not to far from Kikuyu Police Station.
Authorities have warned that they remain on high alert, vowing to deal firmly with any individuals attempting to disrupt peace or endanger lives.
By mid-morning, traffic flow had resumed and businesses reopened, with residents expressing relief after hours of uncertainty.
Gachagua had earlier written to police, saying the area MP had planned to disrupt his rally.
He will be accompanied by other opposition leaders among them Kalonzo Musyoka and Dr Fred Matiang’i.
