WASHINGTON, D.C.- King Charles III and Queen Camilla have arrived in the United States, touching down in Washington, D.C. to begin a high-profile four-day State Visit at the invitation of Donald Trump.
The visit, undertaken on the advice of His Majesty’s Government, marks the first official trip to the U.S. by the King since his accession to the throne in 2022 and coincides with celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary of independence.
Ceremonial welcome and packed agenda
The royal couple landed at Joint Base Andrews before proceeding to the White House, where they are expected to be formally welcomed by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
A ceremonial programme has been lined up, including:
- A State Arrival Ceremony with full military honours
- Private meetings and afternoon tea at the White House
- A lavish State Dinner hosted by the U.S. President
- A historic address by King Charles to the U.S. Congress
The visit will also see engagements beyond Washington, with stops planned in New York and Virginia, underscoring cultural, environmental and historical ties between the two nations.
Symbol of a historic alliance
Buckingham Palace has described the trip as a celebration of the enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States — often referred to as the “special relationship.”
Key moments are expected to include a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and commemorations tied to major historical milestones, including the upcoming 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Visit amid tension and tight security
Despite its ceremonial tone, the visit comes at a sensitive moment. It follows heightened security concerns after a recent shooting incident in Washington and amid diplomatic strains between the two allies.
Officials from both countries have, however, emphasised that the visit is intended to reinforce cooperation and stability between London and Washington.
A defining diplomatic moment
For King Charles, the visit is seen as a defining test of his role on the global stage, blending tradition with diplomacy at a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics.
The four-day tour is expected to conclude with engagements focused on environmental conservation and community outreach before the royal couple departs the United States later this week.
