Lawyer Charged With Sh3 Million Land Fraud in Botched Nairobi Deal

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — A Nairobi-based lawyer, Robert Okoth Opondo, has been charged with allegedly defrauding a businessman of Sh3 million in a failed land transaction.

Opondo appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi, where he denied the charge of obtaining money by false pretences.

Prosecutors told the court that between July 22 and July 25, 2024, Opondo received Sh6 million from Mohamed Mohamed Odon, who was acting on behalf of a client, to facilitate the sale of a Komarock property registered under Title No. NAIROBI BLOCK 111/1151.

Court documents indicate that Opondo only remitted Sh3 million to the property owner — Sh2 million on July 22 and Sh1 million on July 26 — but failed to transfer the remaining amount or complete the conveyancing process.

Despite having received Sh30,000 in legal fees, the advocate allegedly withheld half of the purchase funds without justification.

Opondo was released on bond, pending further mention of the case later this month.
