NAIROBI, Kenya- Constitutional lawyer Prof. Makau Mutua has urged ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna to leave the Orange Democratic Movement if he no longer supports the party’s leadership, while praising ODM leader Oburu Oginga for what he described as measured leadership after the death of Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s JKL Show on Sunday night, Mutua accused Sifuna of being ungrateful to the party that elevated him to national prominence.
“I don’t understand why Sifuna is fighting to keep on sucking on mama’s titty of ODM. He should get the hell out. He should not waste time there; he does not like the party. ODM will outlast him,” Mutua said.
The constitutional lawyer argued that Sifuna rose through ODM under the late Raila Odinga’s leadership before turning against the party.
“Sifuna was picked by Baba from political obscurity and made the Secretary-General of the party. His ingratitude is wrangling. He is a young man; he should be humble, and he should learn how to conduct himself. You cannot go to a political party like that and start threatening it when you are only two days old in the party,” he said.
His remarks come amid continued tensions within ODM over the party’s political direction after the death of Raila Odinga in October 2025.
Oburu Oginga initially took over as acting party leader before being formally elected to lead the party during ODM’s Special Delegates Conference in March 2026.
Mutua praised Oburu’s handling of the party, saying the veteran politician had exercised restraint despite criticism from some younger leaders.
“Oburu Oginga has been a steady hand, he is a wise man, he does not rush to make decisions. He has given some of the young dudes within the party, Sifuna, Babu Owino, and others, a long rope to hang themselves. He has not chased anyone out. He has given them adequate due process for them to prove that they still belong to ODM,” he said.
The law professor also paid tribute to National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, recalling their close working relationship during Raila Odinga’s final presidential campaign in 2022.
“Junet Mohamed and I worked together very closely. No one in this country wanted Baba to win more than Junet and myself. Junet and I were very close to Baba,” Mutua said.
Mutua served as Raila Odinga’s campaign spokesperson during the 2022 General Election but has since become a vocal supporter of President William Ruto.
He is currently serving as President Ruto’s senior advisor on legal issues.
