NAIROBI, Kenya- President William Ruto has appointed Nelson Marwa as chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, replacing Margaret Wanjiru, who resigned before declaring her bid for Nairobi governor.
Marwa’s three-year appointment took effect on October 16, according to Gazette Notice No. 16248 published that day.
The notice also revoked Wanjiru’s appointment.
Wanjiru gave notice of her resignation in August, saying she was ready to move on and focus on other engagements.
She later announced that she would contest the Nairobi governorship in the 2027 General Election on the Kenya Moja Movement ticket.
Her resignation came about 22 months after President Ruto appointed her to lead the commission in October 2024.
The commission coordinates the rehabilitation and protection of Nairobi’s rivers and supports efforts to restore the river corridors.
Its work includes bringing together government agencies involved in river regeneration.
The leadership change comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections, with Wanjiru joining other leaders seeking elective positions in Nairobi.
The Gazette notice did not state the reasons for Marwa’s appointment or outline his immediate priorities at the commission.
