Father Of Two Schoolgirls Identified As Bystander Who Stopped Oregon School Shooter

Date:

BEND, United States – A father of two girls attending an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, has been identified as the bystander who fatally shot a 16-year-old gunman during a deadly rampage that killed three children and a teacher.

Kaylub Giamanco, a lifelong resident of Bend, was reportedly driving past Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday when he heard gunshots and saw the gunman entering the building.

Giamanco’s family confirmed in a statement on Friday that he shot and killed the suspect, identified as Griffin J John II, a former student at the school.

Police said three children aged five, eight and 11, along with a teacher, were killed in the attack. A seven-year-old child and another teacher were injured.

Giamanco has two daughters who attend the school.

Bystander Followed Gunman Into School

Police gave an account of Giamanco’s actions during a news conference on Friday.

According to authorities, he was driving near the school when he heard gunfire and saw the gunman entering the building. Giamanco, who was carrying a licensed .40-calibre pistol, pulled over and followed the suspect inside.

He then witnessed the gunman struggling with a teacher before firing his weapon and killing the assailant, police said.

The intervention brought the attack to an end, although authorities have not disclosed further details about the moments leading up to the shooting.

Family Asks For Privacy After Confirming His Role

Giamanco’s family issued a statement confirming his involvement and asking for privacy as the community comes to terms with the tragedy.

“The tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary has devastated the Bend community,” the family said, adding that Giamanco was grateful for the support shown by first responders, school personnel and residents.

“He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support,” the statement read.

Giamanco’s mother briefly addressed reporters on Friday, reading the family’s statement from her phone and reiterating that her son wanted to remain private.

His sibling, Kameron Giamanco, also confirmed his role in a public Facebook post.

“Yes, my brother shot the shooter in yesterday’s events at the Bend elementary school,” Kameron wrote, while asking the public and media to respect the family’s wishes.

“He’s an absolute HERO. However, we are not speaking to media at this time. He’s not ready, nor is the family.”

Oregon Governor Praises Community Member

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the unidentified community member who intervened during the attack at a news conference on Thursday, before Giamanco’s identity was publicly confirmed by his family.

“To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life,” Kotek said, “your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well.”

The governor’s remarks highlighted the emotional toll that intervening in a violent incident can have on those involved, even as their actions may prevent further casualties.

Investigation Into School Shooting Continues

Authorities are continuing to investigate what led to the attack and have not announced a motive.

According to reporting by the Associated Press, the suspect used a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the investigation would take time and that officers would maintain a significant presence at the school for several days.

“This is going to be a long investigation,” Krantz said.

The shooting has shaken the Bend community, as families, school staff and residents mourn the victims and await further information from investigators.

Giamanco’s family has asked for privacy as he and his relatives process the events surrounding the attack.
