BUNGOMA, Kenya- Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna received spontaneous cash donations from supporters as tens of thousands of people turned out for his Linda Mwananchi homecoming rally in Bungoma on Sunday, capping a politically charged tour of Western Kenya.
The event at Bungoma’s Posta Grounds drew huge crowds after a series of stopovers across Trans Nzoia County, with supporters lining roads to welcome Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi team. Organisers had billed the Bungoma meeting as the movement’s biggest rally in the region.
Before arriving in Bungoma, Sifuna’s convoy stopped in Kiminini, where residents turned a roadside rally into an impromptu fundraising exercise by handing him cash contributions.
Videos circulating online showed supporters making their way through the crowd to reach the senator’s vehicle, donating small amounts ranging from Sh20 coins to Sh50 notes and other denominations in what they described as support for the Linda Mwananchi movement.
With both hands full of cash, Sifuna thanked the supporters, saying the gesture reflected a movement financed by ordinary Kenyans rather than wealthy political financiers.
“The movement will be funded by wananchi, not by billionaires looking to influence our agenda,” Sifuna said after receiving the donations.
The donations came just days after the senator launched the Linda Mwananchi Paybill, urging Kenyans to contribute as little as Sh10 to support the movement’s activities.
According to figures released earlier this week, the initiative had already raised more than Sh2.2 million from thousands of contributors within 36 hours of its launch.
Sunday’s Bungoma homecoming marked the climax of Sifuna’s Western Kenya tour, which has attracted growing political attention amid speculation over his national ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The tour included rallies in Kitale, Kiminini, Kimilili and Chwele before culminating in the Bungoma gathering.
The Linda Mwananchi movement has intensified its nationwide mobilisation in recent weeks, positioning itself as a grassroots-driven political platform that says it relies on small donations from supporters instead of large contributions from wealthy backers.
