Super Metro Back on the Roads After Strike Suspension

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Super Metro has announced the immediate resumption of its operations following the suspension of the nationwide matatu strike that had paralysed transport services across the country for two days.

In a brief statement issued Tuesday evening, the popular public transport operator confirmed that its fleet was back on the roads after transport stakeholders reached a temporary truce with the government.

“BACK TO WORK. We resume our normal operations immediately. Stay safe,” the company said.

The announcement came shortly after matatu operators and transport stakeholders agreed to call off the strike following talks brokered by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and attended by Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.

Transport operators, however, gave the government seven days to address concerns over soaring fuel prices and reforms in the energy sector, warning that another shutdown could follow if no action is taken.

Super Metro had earlier suspended operations due to the strike triggered by record fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The strike left thousands of commuters stranded in Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Mombasa and Kisumu, forcing many to walk long distances to work as matatus remained parked at depots and termini.

The government later revised diesel prices downward following pressure from transport operators, while promising further engagement to address the fuel crisis and rising cost of living.

The return of Super Metro operations is expected to ease commuter pressure in Nairobi and surrounding areas where the company remains one of the largest and most relied upon public transport operators.
