Uganda Introduces Mandatory National Cleaning Days Initiative

Date:

KAMPALA, Uganda- Uganda has introduced a mandatory National Cleaning Days Initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the country under the theme “A Clean Uganda is Everyone’s Responsibility.”

The initiative was unveiled by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, with the government announcing that citizens will participate in organised cleaning exercises as part of efforts to improve sanitation and maintain cleaner public spaces.

Under the programme, the last Saturday of every month will be observed as a National Cleaning Day. The exercise is scheduled to run for three hours, with citizens expected to take part in cleaning activities within their communities.

The government said the initiative is designed to encourage collective responsibility among Ugandans, with communities, businesses and institutions expected to participate in keeping their surroundings clean.

The first cleaning exercise is set to take place on July 25, 2026, marking the start of the monthly programme.

The campaign comes as Uganda seeks to strengthen sanitation practices and create greater public awareness on waste management and environmental protection.

The slogan “A Clean Uganda is Everyone’s Responsibility” highlights the government’s message that maintaining clean communities requires participation from citizens across the country.

The initiative has drawn comparisons with community cleaning models used in other East African countries, including Rwanda’s monthly Umuganda programme, which encourages citizens to participate in communal work.
