DCI Arrests Two Suspects in Brutal Killing of Mombasa Man

Date:

MOMBASA, Kenya Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kisauni Sub-County have arrested two suspects linked to the brutal murder of a Mombasa resident, Stephen Opello, who died days after being viciously assaulted in Chembani, Mtopanga.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DCI said the suspects — Julius Otieno Mageta, also known as Junior, and Mohammed Omar Hamisi, alias Babu — were apprehended following a tip-off from members of the public, underscoring the growing role of community cooperation in criminal investigations.

According to investigators, the murder occurred on November 22, 2025. The two suspects allegedly assaulted Opello during an altercation, leaving him with severe injuries. Good Samaritans rushed the victim to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Despite medical intervention, Opello succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, turning the case into a homicide investigation.

“The suspects were flushed out of their hideout and arrested following actionable intelligence from the public,” the DCI said, adding that the two are currently in custody and undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.

Police did not immediately disclose the motive behind the attack but confirmed that detectives are finalising investigations to establish the circumstances leading to the fatal assault. Officers are also expected to present the suspects before a court of law to face murder charges under the Penal Code.

Security officials reiterated that timely information from the public remains critical in solving crimes and preventing further loss of life. The DCI urged residents to continue sharing credible information through official police channels, assuring them of confidentiality and protection.

The killing of Opello adds to a string of violent incidents reported across parts of Mombasa County, prompting concerns among residents and civil society groups over public safety and the need for sustained law enforcement presence.

Police say the suspects will be formally charged once investigations are concluded, as the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) reviews the case file.
