Relief for Sifuna as ODM Withdraws Motion to Expel Him, Opts for Dialogue

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has withdrawn its motion to expel Senator Edwin Sifuna, opting instead for dialogue and alternative dispute resolution to address ongoing internal disagreements.

The decision follows wide consultations with Party Leader Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga and takes into consideration the founding spirit of the late Raila Amollo Odinga, who championed dialogue even with his fiercest critics.

In a letter dated 6th January 2026, Aguko, Osman & Company Advocates, representing Senator Eddy Oketch, confirmed that the initial motion to de-whip or expel Senator Sifuna, filed on 5th January 2026, had been withdrawn.

Instead, the advocates invoked Article 16(1)(g) of the ODM Party Constitution, which empowers the Party Leader to facilitate amicable resolution of disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

“Our client, in consultation with the Party Leader and relevant party organs, has been persuaded to withdraw the initial motion and instead seek dialogue to protect both the party and its members,” the letter read.

The move comes after allegations that Senator Sifuna had made offensive remarks against the party and its members.

ODM now seeks a resolution that aligns with the principles of unity, dialogue, and mutual respect, in line with the legacy of its founding leader.

This development signals a shift towards reconciliation within the party, ahead of upcoming political engagements in the country.
