NAIROBI, Kenya- Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has likened Kenya’s current political climate to the colonial era, claiming the country is experiencing a resurgence of oppression as he continued consultations at his Wamunyoro residence.

In a statement issued on Saturday after meeting a delegation from Githunguri, Gachagua described the Kiambu constituency as a historic centre of resistance during Kenya’s struggle for independence, saying its people had once fought against British colonial rule and their local collaborators.

He said history was repeating itself, alleging that public assets were being sold, private land invaded and criminal gangs were operating with the support of rogue police officers.

“The oppression being witnessed in the country has not been seen since the departure of the white colonialists,” Gachagua said, while accusing unnamed collaborators of enabling the situation.

The former deputy president said the delegation from Githunguri had assured him that descendants of Kenya’s freedom fighters remained committed to opposing what he termed present-day oppression.

He added that his political consultations at Wamunyoro would continue as he seeks to build support ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua has been holding a series of meetings with political leaders, professionals and delegations from different parts of the country after announcing a 45-day consultation programme at his Nyeri home.

He has said the engagements are aimed at helping the opposition build consensus around a united strategy for the 2027 elections.

He concluded his statement by saying, “The struggle continues, so do the consultations,” before wishing blessings upon Kenya.
