NAIROBI, Kenya — Google has officially launched Android 17, introducing a major software upgrade focused on artificial intelligence, multitasking, content creation, and mobile security.
The update will first roll out to selected Pixel devices before expanding to other eligible Android smartphones throughout 2026.
For Kenyan users, Android 17 is expected to bring practical improvements rather than a complete visual redesign, with features aimed at making smartphones more efficient in daily activities.
One of the biggest additions is improved multitasking through a feature known as Bubbles, which allows supported applications to appear as floating windows while users continue using other apps.
Google has also introduced a Bubble Bar for larger screens, making it easier to switch between conversations, videos and productivity tools without repeatedly opening and closing applications.
The feature could benefit users managing multiple activities on their phones, including students attending online lessons while taking notes, professionals handling work tasks, or shoppers comparing products across different platforms.
Gemini AI expands beyond chat
Android 17 places greater emphasis on Google’s artificial intelligence ambitions through deeper Gemini integration.
Google says selected devices will receive Gemini Intelligence later this year, bringing features designed to help users complete tasks more proactively instead of only responding to commands.
The AI system is expected to support smarter suggestions, automation across applications, and more context-aware assistance.
Instead of manually moving between different apps, users could increasingly rely on AI tools to organise information, manage tasks, and reduce repetitive steps.
The move reflects a wider shift in the smartphone industry, where companies are competing to make devices more intelligent through built-in AI capabilities.
New tools for creators
Android 17 also introduces features aimed at content creators, including Screen Reactions.
The tool allows users to record their screen while simultaneously capturing footage from the front camera.
Google says the feature is designed for creating reaction videos, tutorials, demonstrations, and educational content.
The update could appeal to Kenya’s expanding digital creator economy, where smartphones are increasingly used as recording devices, editing tools, and publishing platforms.
Security and privacy upgrades
Security remains a major focus of Android 17, with Google introducing stronger privacy controls and protection features.
The update includes temporary precise location permissions, improved anti-theft tools, enhanced scam detection, and tighter controls over information accessed by applications.
The improvements come as more users rely on smartphones for banking, shopping, communication, and work.
For many users, stronger protection against fraud and unauthorised access may be among the most important changes in the update.
Rollout depends on manufacturers
Android 17 will not reach all devices at the same time.
While Pixel phones will receive the update first, other smartphone brands must adapt the software before releasing it to their customers.
Popular brands in Kenya, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Tecno, and Infinix, are expected to determine availability based on individual models and update schedules.
