NAIROBI, Kenya- Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has defended the Kenya Kwanza administration’s investment in Nyanza, saying the region is finally receiving its fair share of national development after years of underinvestment.

Speaking during a women empowerment forum in Nyando Constituency on Saturday, Omollo said the government is implementing major projects in infrastructure, flood control, water supply, housing, electricity and youth empowerment as part of its commitment to equitable development across the country.

He dismissed criticism over increased government investment in the region, saying Nyanza deserves the same level of development as every other part of Kenya.

“Nyanza is part of Kenya and its people deserve development just like every other Kenyan,” he said.

Omollo said the government has adopted a national approach to development that prioritises need rather than political affiliation, adding that no region should be left behind.

He cited ongoing flood mitigation works in the Kano Plains, where 15 kilometres of dykes have already been completed out of the planned 30 kilometres through the Lake Basin Development Authority.

He said additional funding has been allocated in the current financial year to complete the remaining sections in Nyando and other flood-prone areas.

The Principal Secretary also announced that two of the planned 50 mega dams earmarked for construction nationwide will be built in the Lake Region to enhance flood control, irrigation and water supply.

On public administration, Omollo said the government will continue expanding grassroots services through the creation of additional administrative units and the recruitment of more chiefs and assistant chiefs to improve service delivery.

He urged young people to shun crime and reject attempts by politicians to recruit them into violent groups, saying their future lies in education, entrepreneurship and innovation.

“Our youth must not be associated with criminal gangs, goons or lawlessness. The future of this region lies in education, enterprise, innovation and hard work,” he said.

Omollo also encouraged eligible residents to register for national identity cards and voter registration, saying civic participation remains essential for democratic governance and national development.

He said the growing number of development projects in Nyanza reflects President William Ruto’s commitment to ensuring equitable distribution of resources across the country.

The Principal Secretary called on leaders and residents to uphold peace and work together in supporting government programmes, saying sustained development depends on stability, unity and cooperation.
