Addressing a crowd at Wakulima Market in Nairobi on Friday, Gachagua dismissed the impeachment plot as futile and warned the MPs behind it that their efforts would fail.
“I was elected by Kenyans, not MPs. It is those Kenyans who can remove me from office when the time comes,” Gachagua declared at the roadside rally.
The Deputy President accused the plotters of using bribes to garner support for his ouster, but insisted that their attempts to intimidate him would not work.
“They gathered MPs, bribed them, and tried to intimidate me. But they will not succeed,” he asserted.
Gachagua went on to thank Starehe MP Amos Mwago, who was present at the rally, for distancing himself from the group of lawmakers pushing for his removal.
He urged leaders to focus on development instead of divisive politics.
“When you go to the grassroots, tell the people from Nyandarua and Murang’a to leave me alone. Leaders should be careful with the kind of politics they are playing, so they don’t destroy the country,” he advised.
Gachagua also emphasized that the people of Mt Kenya had supported President William Ruto in the 2022 elections willingly, without coercion.
He cautioned those behind the plot to respect the mandate given to him by voters.
“Those plotting against me must respect us. Don’t try us. And to those hurling insults, know that you’re not insulting Gachagua—you’re insulting the people who voted for him,” he added.
