The 107-kilometer, 132kV line, now operational, promises to end years of chronic power outages that had stifled growth and inconvenienced residents and businesses alike.
For decades, Loitoktok town and its surrounding areas struggled with an unreliable electricity supply, with outages lasting up to six hours daily.
The outdated infrastructure couldn’t meet the demands of a growing population, expanding businesses, and a thriving tourism sector in the Amboseli ecosystem.
The construction of the new line, which began three years ago, has finally brought stability and reliability to the region’s power grid.
“The line starts at Sultan Hamud in Makueni County and delivers power to Kajiado County, traversing two vast regions,” explained Dennis Busolo, KETRACO’s senior resident engineer.
The project also included the construction of the Loitoktok substation, which Kenya Power has already integrated into its distribution network.
The Sultan Hamud-Loitoktok line is part of the Kenya Power Transmission Expansion Project, co-funded by the Government of Kenya and the EXIM Bank of China.
It is one of three key infrastructure projects aimed at boosting the country’s energy network.
