Eldoret Turns Into A Sea Of Flags As Kenyans Brave Cold Night For Mashujaa Day

Date:

ELDORET, Kenya – Thousands of Kenyans braved the chilly night in Eldoret, arriving at Kipchoge Keino Stadium hours before dawn to secure seats for the 63rd Mashujaa Day celebrations, as the city prepared to host one of the country’s most significant national events.

By midnight, crowds had begun streaming into the stadium, with videos showing people pushing through the entrances in a rush to find places in the stands. Security officers were on hand as the numbers grew, while many attendees wrapped themselves in heavy clothing to withstand the cold.

By 6am on Tuesday, October 20, the stadium was already filled with thousands of Kenyans, many waving the national flag as they waited for the official programme to begin.

The early turnout offered a glimpse of the anticipation surrounding this year’s celebrations, which are being jointly hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties for the first time. President William Ruto arrived at the venue ahead of the national ceremony, according to reports from the event.

The gathering has placed Eldoret at the centre of national attention, bringing together Kenyans from different regions to honour individuals whose courage, sacrifice and contributions have helped shape the country.

Kenyans braved chilly overnight conditions to secure seats at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret for the 63rd Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, 2026.

A Night Of Waiting For A National Celebration

For many attendees, securing a seat meant reaching the stadium long before sunrise and spending hours in the cold.

As the night progressed, the crowds grew, with security personnel overseeing entry and spectators making their way into stands arranged in the colours of the Kenyan flag.

By dawn, the stadium had transformed into a sea of people, with flags waving across the stands and groups of spectators waiting for the day’s programme.

The scenes highlighted the significance many Kenyans attach to national celebrations, which combine patriotic displays with recognition of the people who have contributed to the country’s history and development.

Mashujaa Day events typically include presidential speeches, military displays, cultural performances and the recognition of individuals whose work has made a difference in their communities and the nation.

This year’s celebrations are being held at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, with the three host counties coordinating preparations and activities around the national event.

Why Kenya Celebrates Mashujaa Day On October 20

Mashujaa Day is observed every year on October 20 to honour Kenya’s heroes and heroines, from those who participated in the struggle against colonial rule to people making significant contributions in public service, sports, education, business, culture and other fields.

The day provides an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom and to recognise the contributions of Kenyans working to improve the country.

The date also carries historical significance. October 20 was the day in 1952 when the colonial administration declared a state of emergency and began mass arrests during the crackdown associated with the Mau Mau uprising. Among those detained was Jomo Kenyatta, who later became Kenya’s first President.

Originally known as Kenyatta Day, the holiday was renamed Mashujaa Day under the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, broadening its purpose to honour heroes and heroines across the country rather than a single individual.

Article 9 of the Constitution lists Mashujaa Day among Kenya’s national days, alongside Madaraka Day on June 1 and Jamhuri Day on December 12. All three are public holidays.

Three Counties Share The Spotlight

The 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations have brought a special focus to the North Rift region, with Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties jointly hosting the national event.

Eldoret, the main venue, has been preparing to receive visitors from across Kenya, with the celebrations expected to showcase the region’s development, culture and economic potential.

The joint hosting arrangement has also provided an opportunity for the neighbouring counties to coordinate activities and present their contributions to national development.

For residents and visitors who arrived at Kipchoge Keino Stadium during the night, the long wait in the cold formed part of the experience of attending a national celebration in their home region.

As the programme got underway, the packed stands and sea of Kenyan flags offered a vivid picture of the public enthusiasm surrounding Mashujaa Day and the country’s annual tribute to its heroes and heroines.
