NAIROBI, Kenya – Long before the title, the spotlight, and the weight of public office, Nyandarua Senator John Methu was simply Methu in the narrow corridors of his high school, and his courage was already evident.
This is according to content creator Lydia Wanjiru, one of his former schoolmates. Lydia says the man the public sees today is no different from the boy he was back then.
“My schoolmate, he’s been like this since I knew him. Sio muoga huyu,” Lydia revealed.
The two shared more than just classrooms.
They were part of the same graduating class, navigating school life in an environment Lydia now describes as a breeding ground for “the best human minds.”
Their connection, though not always direct, was woven through the close-knit dynamics of school life.
According to the influencer, Methu happened to be her high school sweetheart’s desk mate.
Lydia says she quietly endured body shaming and hurtful whispers in school, unaware that behind the scenes, Methu was standing up for her.
“He defended me big time,” she recalls. “And I only found out much later.”
To her, that quiet courage is what defines him. Not the speeches, not the office, but the consistent willingness to stand up for others.
It’s why, when she reflects on their high school, her pride extends beyond nostalgia. She believes it was a place that shaped thinkers, leaders, and individuals unafraid to act on their convictions.
“One day I’ll organize reunions and you’ll meet the most brilliant minds.,” Lydia said.
Methu attended Heni Primary School and Goshen High School, later graduating with a degree in Political Science from Pwani University.
