
NAIROBI, Kenya- The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released an updated list of universities accredited to offer law programmes in Kenya, identifying institutions licensed to offer Master of Laws (LL.M), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Diploma in Law programmes.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, July 7, the council said only four institutions are currently licensed to offer the Master of Laws programme.
The accredited institutions are Kenyatta University School of Law, Strathmore Law School, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) School of Law.
Sixteen universities cleared to offer LL.B
CLE also confirmed that 16 public and private universities have been accredited to offer the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme.
The approved institutions are Umma University School of Law, Chuka University Faculty of Law, Tharaka University School of Law, Zetech University School of Law, Tom Mboya University School of Law, Daystar University School of Law (Athi River Campus), University of Embu School of Law, Kisii University School of Law, Mount Kenya University School of Law (Parklands Campus), Riara Law School, Kenyatta University School of Law, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology School of Law, Catholic University of Eastern Africa Faculty of Law, Strathmore Law School, Maseno University School of Law and South Eastern Kenya University School of Law.
At the diploma level, CLE has accredited four institutions to offer legal education.
They are Mount Kenya University School of Law (Parklands Campus), Kisii University School of Law, Kenya School of Law and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa Faculty of Law.
Nine institutions await approval
The council further disclosed that applications from nine universities seeking accreditation to offer legal education programmes remain under consideration.
The institutions are Egerton University Faculty of Law, Kabarak University School of Law, Africa Nazarene University School of Law, Moi University School of Law, University of Nairobi Faculty of Law (Parklands Campus), Rongo University School of Law, Kenya Methodist University School of Law, Murang’a University of Technology School of Law and Mount Kenya University School of Law.
CLE did not indicate when the pending applications would be determined.
Industrial attachment opportunities
The updated accreditation list comes weeks after the council announced industrial attachment opportunities for university students.
In a notice issued on June 11, CLE invited applications for a three-month industrial attachment programme scheduled to run from August to October 2026.
The programme offers four placement opportunities, comprising two positions for students pursuing Information Science and two for those studying Archives and Records Management.
Applicants must be continuing Degree or Diploma students from accredited institutions, be available for the full three-month attachment period, and provide an official introduction letter from their respective learning institutions.
The Council of Legal Education is the statutory body mandated to regulate legal education and training in Kenya, including the accreditation of institutions offering law programmes and oversight of standards in legal education.
