MOMBASA, Kenya — Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have seized cannabis valued at approximately Sh6 million and arrested three suspects in a targeted raid in Mtopanga, Mombasa County.
The operation, conducted following an intelligence tip-off, dismantled what investigators described as an active drug trafficking ring operating from a residential premises.
Raid on a two-bedroom house
According to a statement from DCI Kenya, detectives stormed a two-bedroom house in Mtopanga Area where illicit activity was reportedly taking place.
Upon entry, officers recovered three large sacks filled with cannabis sativa. The total haul weighed approximately 200 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Sh6,000,000.
Authorities also recovered a Honda motorcycle, registration number KMGA 080F, which is believed to have been used to distribute the narcotics within Mombasa and surrounding areas.
The seized drugs and motorcycle were taken as exhibits for forensic processing and further investigation.
Three suspects in custody
Three individuals were arrested during the operation and are currently in custody pending arraignment. They have been identified as Ruth Ayoo Ouko, Peter Juma Kamito, and Dennis Wandera Okuku.
Investigators said the suspects were apprehended at the scene and are being processed as part of ongoing inquiries into the wider network behind the trafficking operation.
Officials said the suspects are expected to face charges related to possession, trafficking, and distribution of narcotics under Kenya’s drug control laws.
Intelligence-led enforcement
The Anti-Narcotics Unit said the operation was based on intelligence gathered over time, which pointed to sustained drug distribution activities within the area.
The raid is part of ongoing enforcement efforts by security agencies to disrupt narcotics supply chains, particularly in coastal counties that have in recent years faced recurring drug trafficking concerns.
Mombasa has remained a key transit and distribution point in regional narcotics networks due to its port access and transport links.
Community impact and security concerns
Authorities have repeatedly warned that narcotics trafficking continues to fuel broader social and security challenges, including youth addiction, organized crime, and economic exploitation in urban settlements.
Security agencies have intensified surveillance in known hotspots, relying heavily on intelligence-led policing and community cooperation to identify and dismantle drug networks.
In this latest operation, officers credited public information for enabling swift action, which led to the seizure of the drugs before they could be distributed further.
Ongoing investigations
The DCI confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish whether the suspects are linked to a larger trafficking syndicate operating within Mombasa County and beyond.
Authorities have also indicated that further arrests may follow as detectives trace supply chains and financial links connected to the seized narcotics.
The suspects remain in custody as the case awaits court proceedings.
