NAIROBI, Kenya — Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has launched preparations for the 2026 Presidential National Health Summit, describing it as a key platform for assessing progress in Kenya’s health sector reforms and shaping the next phase of the country’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Speaking after chairing the inaugural Planning Committee meeting on Monday, Duale said the summit will bring together stakeholders from across the health sector to review achievements made over the past three and a half years and identify priorities for future reforms.

Reviewing health sector reforms

According to the Health CS, the summit will showcase progress recorded in healthcare financing, primary healthcare, digital health, legislation, regulation and institutional reforms under President William Ruto’s administration.

The forum will also evaluate remaining gaps in the health system, document lessons learned and formulate practical recommendations aimed at improving access to quality, affordable healthcare.

“The Summit will showcase the progress made over the past three and a half years… while providing an opportunity to assess remaining gaps, share lessons and develop practical actions to accelerate the delivery of quality, affordable and accessible healthcare for all Kenyans,” Duale said.

Call for accountability

Duale underscored the need for coordinated planning and accountability during preparations for the summit, urging organising teams to focus on measurable outcomes and evidence-based recommendations.

He also acknowledged the contribution of development and implementing partners in supporting ongoing health sector reforms and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage.

The meeting brought together Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga, Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth, heads of directorates, technical and administrative teams, and chief executive officers of state corporations, regulatory agencies and other institutions under the Ministry of Health.
