NAIROBI, Kenya — DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua has congratulated Sammy Kamau Ngotho after he emerged as the winner in the Democracy for the Citizens Party primaries for the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
In a statement posted Sunday morning, Gachagua said Kamau garnered 12,957 votes in the nominations, describing the exercise as evidence that the party remained committed to democratic and transparent internal processes.
“This contest has demonstrated to the people of Kenya that our party is a free and democratic space for all and it is the voice of the Kenyan people that we listen to,” Gachagua said.
He thanked residents of Ol Kalou for turning out in large numbers to participate in the exercise and praised party members for maintaining peace throughout the voting process.
The former Deputy President also commended aspirants who lost in the nominations, urging them to rally behind the party’s candidate ahead of the July 16 by-election.
“For those who did not make it, you are our true heroes for participating in the contest and agreeing to support the winner,” he stated.
Gachagua further praised the party’s National Elections Board for what he described as meticulous planning and organisation during the nominations.
He claimed the exercise was already being viewed as one of the most transparent party nomination exercises since the return of multi-party democracy in Kenya in 1992.
The former Deputy President also thanked the National Police Service in Nyandarua County for providing security at polling stations and tallying centres.

“The police lived up to their motto of Utumishi Kwa Wote, and I pray this will be replicated on polling day on July 16, 2026,” he said.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of former MP David Kiaraho in March while undergoing treatment in Nairobi.
The by-election is expected to attract intense political competition, with both the ruling United Democratic Alliance and Gachagua’s DCP seeking to demonstrate influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
