NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has outlined a new online process that allows candidates to access, download, and verify their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates through a digital e-certificate platform.
The initiative is intended to simplify certificate access while improving the security and authenticity of academic credentials through a fully digital system.
Step-by-step guide to access KCSE certificates online
1. Register on the e-certificate portal
Candidates should visit the official KNEC e-certificate portal and create an account using:
- Full names.
- A valid email address.
New users must verify their accounts using a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to the registered email address.
2. Update personal details
After logging in, applicants are required to provide or update:
- Citizenship details.
- Date of birth.
- Phone number.
- National identification information where applicable.
3. Generate the e-certificate
To request a KCSE e-certificate, candidates must enter:
- Their KCSE index number.
- The year of examination.
- The type of examination.
The system will automatically verify the information before allowing the application to proceed.
4. Pay the required fee
KNEC has set the fee for each e-certificate at KSh1,500.
Payment options include:
- M-Pesa STK Push sent to the applicant’s registered phone number.
- An online payment page available on the platform.
5. Download the certificate
Once payment is confirmed, the e-certificate becomes available for download in PDF format.
How certificate verification works
KNEC has also introduced an online verification service for employers, universities, colleges, and other institutions.
With the candidate’s consent, a certificate can be verified electronically by:
- Uploading the downloaded e-certificate.
- Entering the examination details.
- Selecting the receiving institution or entering custom recipient information.
- Paying the verification fee.
A verification report is then generated and sent electronically to the designated institution.
Who can use the platform?
The service covers KCSE certificates issued from 1989 to the present, allowing both recent candidates and former students to access their academic records online.
According to KNEC, the digital platform is expected to:
- Reduce paperwork.
- Improve efficiency.
- Provide secure access to certificates.
- Speed up verification for employment, university admissions, and other official purposes.
