JKUAT Student Dies After Suffering Convulsions in Juja

Date:

JUJA, Kenya — Police have launched investigations into the sudden death of a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) after he reportedly suffered convulsions while asleep at his residence in Juja, Kiambu County.

According to a police report filed at Juja Police Station, the incident was reported on July 29 under Occurrence Book (OB) No. 69/29/07/2026.

Police said the student, who was pursuing studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences, was at his rented house at Skyline Apartments on the night of July 28 with his girlfriend, a second-year Pharmacy student at JKUAT.

The woman told investigators that they had dinner together before going to bed at about 9.00 p.m., and that the student appeared to be in normal health.

At around 3.30 a.m., she reportedly noticed him making unusual movements while asleep before he began convulsing.

She raised the alarm and sought help from other students living within the apartment block. By the time they arrived, the student had reportedly lost consciousness.

The group hired a taxi and rushed him to St. John’s Hospital in Juja, where they were referred to Thika Level 5 Hospital for specialised treatment.

However, as his condition deteriorated, they diverted to Kalimoni Mission Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police officers, including the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC), the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel visited and documented the scene.

Preliminary inquiries also established, through the deceased’s siblings, that he had a history of convulsions.

The body was moved to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital mortuary for preservation pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have classified the incident as a sudden death, with investigations continuing to establish the exact cause of death.
