Kenya Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Shisha Outlets in Nairobi

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Ministry of Health has intensified its efforts to combat illegal shisha outlets in Nairobi, launching a coordinated operation this weekend in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

The crackdown, led by the Division of Drug and Substance Abuse Control, resulted in multiple arrests and the confiscation of illegal shisha delivery systems across the city.

This operation marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to enforce the national shisha ban, which aims to safeguard public health and curb the rising use of shisha, particularly among the youth.

Several outlets suspected of operating without licenses were raided, and offenders were arrested. The authorities also impounded several shisha delivery systems used for illegal distribution.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that this enforcement action is only the beginning, with plans to extend the operation nationwide.

“The fight to eliminate illegal shisha outlets is ongoing, and we will continue to enforce the ban until it is upheld across the country,” said Mary Muthoni Muriuki, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards.

The individuals arrested during this weekend’s operation will be arraigned in court on Monday for violating the law.

In addition, the Ministry urged the public to actively report any illegal shisha outlets to the authorities.

This collaborative effort is part of a broader strategy to ensure the health and safety of the Kenyan population, particularly the youth, who are the most vulnerable to the harmful effects of shisha smoking.

The crackdown comes amidst growing concerns over the health risks associated with shisha use, which has been linked to respiratory issues, addiction, and other severe health conditions.

Despite the government’s efforts to regulate and ban shisha, illegal outlets continue to operate in various parts of the country, often under the radar.

“We remain committed to protecting the health of our citizens and will continue to work tirelessly to eliminate violations of the shisha ban,” Muriuki added.

The public’s support will be crucial in the success of these efforts, with the Ministry calling for a collective approach to ensure a healthier future for the youth and all Kenyans.

By reporting illegal activities, citizens can play an integral role in helping to uphold the law and protect public health.
