Nairobi, Kiambu Lead as IEBC Nears 2 Million New Voters Before Deadline

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that 1,876,274 new voters have been registered under the ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise, as the country edges closer to the April 28 deadline.

In a status update issued Friday, April 24, the commission said the figures reflect registrations recorded between March 30 and April 23, marking a sharp increase of 505,344 voters since the last update a week earlier.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon urged eligible Kenyans who have not yet registered to take advantage of the remaining days, warning that voter registration is central to the credibility of the 2027 General Election.

“The credibility and legitimacy of any election is dependent on a comprehensive and accurate Register of Voters,” he said, citing Article 38 of the Constitution, which guarantees political rights, including participation in free and fair elections.

According to the commission, Nairobi County leads in new registrations with 209,965 voters, followed by Kiambu (97,557) and Nakuru (81,166).

Other regions with strong turnout include Kakamega (80,711) and Bungoma (62,203), reflecting heightened voter mobilisation across key population centres.

Beyond new registrations, the IEBC reported 159,410 voter transfers and 2,817 updates of personal details, indicating ongoing adjustments within the electoral roll.

The commission outlined a multi-stage process for preparing the final Register of Voters, including biometric data capture, de-duplication, and validation.

The data is subjected to fingerprint matching and alphanumeric checks to eliminate duplicate entries before compilation into the official register.

Once compiled, the register will undergo a 30-day public verification exercise, allowing voters to confirm their details and raise objections. This will be followed by an independent audit before final certification and publication in the Kenya Gazette.

IEBC clarified that during the verification phase, voters will only see their registration centres online, with polling stations to be assigned closer to the election period.

The commission also stressed that voter registration is currently suspended in areas with pending by-elections or election petitions, including Ol Kalou, Malava, and Mbeere North constituencies.

The ECVR exercise forms part of preparations for the August 10, 2027, General Election, where Kenyans will elect leaders across six elective positions.

IEBC officials have repeatedly emphasised that the integrity of the voter register underpins democratic governance, calling on political actors and stakeholders to avoid misinformation or interference that could undermine the process.

“The integrity, credibility, and sustainability of the electoral system are matters of collective national responsibility,” Ethekon said.
