NAIROBI, Kenya – Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has praised ODM leader Raila Odinga for his monumental contributions to Kenya’s democracy and social justice but urged him to recognize that the time has come to step aside from active politics.
Onyonka commended Raila’s legacy but emphasized that the country now needs a new generation of leaders to take the political stage.
Speaking during a May 5, 2025, talk show, Onyonka acknowledged Raila’s pivotal role in Kenya’s political history, stating, “Raila has played a role that cannot be erased. But a good player must know when to leave the dance floor.”
He expressed that Raila’s legacy should be preserved for history, and it’s time for him to pass the baton to younger leaders.
Onyonka also explained his shift in political allegiance, revealing that he disagreed with Raila’s decision to cooperate with President William Ruto.
He noted that his constituents, especially young Kenyans, felt that Raila should have refrained from joining forces with the government, preserving his name for future generations.
Addressing concerns about his break with Raila, Onyonka dismissed the idea of resigning from ODM or calling for a by-election, stating that such a move would waste public resources and that he would win the election overwhelmingly if necessary.
Onyonka has become a key ally of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i in his presidential bid, playing a central role in building political alliances with other opposition figures.
