TikTok Viral ‘Kwa Mbae’ Moment Spurs Nationwide Fundraiser

Date:

THARAKA NITHI, Kenya — A viral TikTok moment has sparked a nationwide wave of support, with hundreds of Kenyans gathering at Kajiunduthi Stadium to assist the family of a five-year-old boy popularly known as the “Kwa Mbae” child.

The boy, identified as Musa Kihara, gained national attention after a short video clip showed him confidently directing a bodaboda rider using local landmarks—a moment that quickly resonated with Kenyans online.

What began as humour soon evolved into a coordinated act of giving. Content creators, local leaders, and well-wishers travelled from across the country to Tharaka Nithi, bringing financial donations, clothing, and pledges toward medical support for the boy’s family.

Among those involved in the mobilisation was Nairobi County Head of Customer Care Services Geoffrey Mosiria, who said the initiative demonstrated the power of collective action driven by social media.

“Today has been a success. Tumekuwa Kwa Mbae huko Tharaka Nithi to support Moses Kihara and his brother Lewis, who is battling throat cancer. Through my platforms, I helped raise Sh500,000 to support the family,” Mosiria said.

He added that the funds form part of a broader support plan, noting that the boy’s brother had already undergone surgery and remains in recovery.

Lewis has already undergone surgery and is still recuperating at the hospital, and we continue to pray for his full recovery. Indeed, when Kenyans come together, great things happen,” he said.

Mosiria also used the moment to call for policy reforms, urging lawmakers to consider legislation that would expand access to free cancer diagnosis and treatment in both public and private hospitals.

The viral clip that sparked the mobilisation featured Musa giving directions in a manner familiar to many rural Kenyans—referencing homesteads and well-known individuals instead of formal road markers.

The phrase “Kwa Mbae” quickly became a trending sound across TikTok, inspiring memes, recreations, and widespread engagement.

However, as the video circulated, attention shifted to the boy’s living conditions, prompting users to trace his location and share details about the family’s challenges. This shift triggered calls for support, culminating in the weekend fundraising event.

Images and videos shared online showed large crowds assembling at Kajiunduthi Stadium, where donations were collected and handed over. Some participants documented the event on social media, while others contributed quietly.

“We came because we laughed. We stayed because we saw a family that needs us,” one attendee wrote online, reflecting a sentiment widely echoed across platforms.

Mosiria noted that part of the funds raised would also support the bodaboda rider who recorded the original clip, with plans to help him acquire his own motorcycle.

The event underscores a growing trend in Kenya, where social media platforms are increasingly being used to mobilise real-world support for individuals in need.

Support efforts for the Kihara family remain ongoing, with contributions continuing both online and on the ground. Organisers say the funds will prioritise medical care and immediate household needs, with some plans to facilitate specialised treatment in Nairobi.

What started as a brief roadside exchange has since evolved into a national story of solidarity—highlighting how digital engagement can translate into tangible community action.
