NAIROBI, Kenya — The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for a swift, thorough and impartial investigation into the murder of advocate Edward Muthee Kariuki, whose body was found outside his home in Athi River, Machakos County.
In a statement issued on Monday, LSK President Charles Kanjama described the killing as a tragic loss to both the legal profession and the country, saying it raises serious concerns about the safety and security of citizens.
“The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) expresses its profound grief and deep concern following the tragic death of Mr. Edward Muthee Kariuki, Advocate, who was found murdered outside his residence in Athi River on 5th July 2026,” Kanjama said.
According to the society, Kariuki practised under the name Edward Kariuki Law Advocates, with offices located along Kiambu Road.
LSK said the killing casts “a grim shadow on the state’s duty to protect the lives of its citizens” and extended condolences to Kariuki’s family, friends, colleagues and the wider legal fraternity.
LSK monitoring investigations
The lawyers’ body said it has activated its Lawyer-Police Liaison Committee to engage the deceased’s family and follow up with investigators as the probe continues.
“The Law Society of Kenya, through its Lawyer-Police Liaison Committee, is in close contact with the family and is actively following up on the ongoing investigations with the relevant authorities,” the statement said.
LSK pledged to closely monitor the progress of the investigations and pursue all available legal and institutional avenues to ensure accountability.
“LSK will remain actively seized of this matter, closely monitor the progress of the investigations, and take all necessary legal, institutional, and advocacy measures to ensure that justice is not only done, but is manifestly seen to be done,” Kanjama stated.
The society also appealed to investigative agencies to expedite the inquiry and urged members of the public with information that could assist detectives to cooperate with authorities.
“The Law Society of Kenya calls upon the investigating agencies to conduct thorough, expeditious, and impartial investigations and urges anyone with relevant information to cooperate with the authorities in the pursuit of justice,” the statement added.
Renewed focus on security
The killing comes amid growing concern over violent crime and the safety of professionals across the country. It also follows recent public calls by legal and political leaders for stronger law enforcement and greater accountability in addressing insecurity.
Police had not publicly announced any arrests or disclosed a possible motive for the killing by Monday.
The circumstances surrounding Kariuki’s death remain under investigation.
