NAIROBI, Kenya — An aircraft operated by EBB Air was involved in a runway excursion at Mandera Airstrip on Friday after reportedly failing to stop within runway limits during landing.
The Embraer aircraft, registration 5Y-EBB, was operating on the Mandera–Nairobi route when it overshot the runway and came to rest in vegetation beyond the airstrip boundary.
All passengers and crew were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported, according to preliminary information.
Aviation authorities have launched investigations into the incident, with the cause yet to be established.
Initial operational data shows the aircraft had been actively deployed in domestic service in the days leading up to the incident, completing multiple flight segments within Nairobi, including routes between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport.
On April 20, the aircraft undertook several back-to-back flights, with recorded segments lasting approximately four hours. It remained in continuous operation throughout the day, indicating a high utilisation rate.
On April 23, the aircraft also completed a short intra-airport movement, recorded as a five-minute flight segment within Nairobi.
Investigators are expected to examine a range of factors common in runway excursion cases, including aircraft landing performance, runway surface conditions, and weather at the time of arrival.
Other key areas of focus include aircraft weight and balance, crew actions during approach and touchdown, as well as flight data and cockpit voice recordings.
Maintenance history and overall operational records will also form part of the inquiry.
EBB Air had not issued a public statement on the incident by the time of publication.
Operations at Mandera Airstrip were temporarily disrupted as recovery and safety inspections were conducted following the incident.
