NAIROBI, Kenya — The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the 2,000-bed Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Multi-Speciality Hospital project on schedule, following a high-level review meeting between officials from the Ministries of Health and Defence.
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, on Thursday, met Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Peter Mariru at the Ministry of Defence headquarters to assess progress on the flagship health infrastructure project currently under construction in Uasin Gishu County.
According to the Ministry of Health, the meeting focused on construction milestones, implementation timelines, and measures required to ensure the facility is operational within the planned schedule.
Dr. Oluga said the project remains a key national investment aimed at strengthening Kenya’s healthcare system and expanding access to specialised medical services.
“The MTRH Multi-Speciality Hospital Project is a critical national investment that will enhance Kenya’s capacity to provide advanced healthcare, support medical training and research, and strengthen the country’s referral health system,” he said.
The hospital is being implemented by the Ministry of Defence under an intergovernmental arrangement that has seen the military play a growing role in delivering strategic national infrastructure projects.
Once completed in early 2027, the facility is expected to become the largest hospital in Kenya, significantly increasing the country’s specialised healthcare capacity and reducing the need for patients to seek advanced treatment abroad.
The project is also expected to bolster Kenya’s position as a regional medical hub by supporting specialised treatment, training of healthcare professionals, and medical research.
During the meeting, the two Principal Secretaries reiterated their commitment to ensuring the timely completion and operational readiness of the hospital.

The Ministry of Health said the discussions also underscored the importance of collaboration between the Health and Defence ministries in implementing major infrastructure projects designed to improve service delivery.
Officials noted that such partnerships are helping accelerate the rollout of strategic investments while ensuring projects are delivered within agreed timelines and quality standards.
Also present at the meeting were the Ministry of Health’s Head of Infrastructure Projects, Dr. Hezron Omolo, and the Ministry of Defence’s Chief of Special Projects, Brigadier Titus Sokobe.
