WASHINGTON, D.C.— Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet United States President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday in their first face-to-face talks since the outbreak of the Iran war, with regional security, diplomacy and the future of Gaza expected to dominate the agenda.
The meeting will be the eighth between the two leaders since Trump’s return to office and comes amid efforts by Washington to pursue a diplomatic path following months of heightened tensions involving Iran.
Although Israel participated alongside the United States in strikes against Iran earlier this year, it has not taken part in the latest round of hostilities that erupted after an April ceasefire between Washington and Tehran collapsed.
Iran Expected to Dominate Talks
Speaking before departing Israel on Monday, Netanyahu said discussions with Trump would centre on regional security, particularly Iran.
“This is a great privilege, but it is also a great responsibility,” Netanyahu said.
“We will discuss all the issues on the agenda, first and foremost Iran. Naturally, our goal is to safeguard our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us.”
The meeting comes as the United States continues to signal its preference for negotiations with Iran despite recent military confrontations.
Leaders Seek to Reaffirm Alliance
Relations between Trump and Netanyahu have appeared strained in recent months, particularly during ceasefire negotiations earlier this year when the US President publicly criticised the Israeli leader.
Trump at one point described Netanyahu as “a very difficult guy,” while reports indicated disagreements over the handling of the conflict.
Netanyahu, however, has consistently downplayed the tensions, describing them as tactical differences rather than fundamental disagreements.
Analysts believe Tuesday’s meeting is intended to demonstrate unity between the two allies despite recent public exchanges.
Yonatan Freeman, an international relations expert at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said the visit is aimed at dispelling speculation about deteriorating ties.
“The main issue is to show the world, to show Iran, and also Lebanon and others, that there is no break or any kind of major disagreement between the United States and Israel,” Freeman said.
He added that while the two leaders may differ on the pace and methods of military operations, they largely remain aligned on broader strategic objectives.
Lebanon and Gaza Also on Agenda
The leaders are also expected to review the implementation of the US-backed agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon last month, whose implementation has faced challenges on the ground.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is also likely to feature in the discussions as international efforts to advance reconstruction remain stalled nearly three years after the conflict with Hamas began.
Israel has continued military operations in Gaza, saying it is targeting militants, while humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned of worsening conditions for civilians in the territory.
Regional Peace Efforts
Beyond security matters, Trump is expected to press ahead with efforts to expand the Abraham Accords, the normalisation agreements brokered during his first administration that established diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab states.
Observers say the talks could also explore possibilities for reducing Israel’s military footprint in parts of the region, including Lebanon, Syria and Gaza, although no official proposals have been announced.
Political Stakes at Home
Netanyahu’s visit comes as he prepares for Israel’s next general election, where he is expected to seek another term in office.
Recent opinion polls indicate the Israeli Prime Minister faces growing political pressure, with criticism persisting over his government’s handling of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the Gaza war.
The White House meeting is therefore expected to carry both diplomatic and domestic political significance as the two leaders seek to demonstrate continued cooperation on regional security and Middle East stability.
