OL KALOU, Kenya— The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election has delivered a decisive victory for the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) after its candidate, Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah by a commanding margin.
Official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) showed Kamau winning with 35,440 votes, while Nyagah secured 5,450 votes.
The contest, held to replace the late MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, had attracted national attention, with political observers viewing it as an early indicator of shifting political dynamics in the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
A High-Stakes Contest
The by-election witnessed an intense campaign involving senior political leaders from both the ruling coalition and the opposition.
The government launched and commissioned several development projects in the constituency during the campaign period, while opposition leaders accused state agencies of using public resources to influence the vote. Government officials maintained that the projects formed part of ongoing development programmes and rejected claims of electoral misconduct.
During the campaign, the IEBC warned candidates and voters against bribery and other election offences, stating that any reported violations would be handled under the law.
DCP’s Grassroots Campaign
While UDA focused on mobilising support through senior government officials and development pledges, DCP relied heavily on grassroots mobilisation led by party leader Rigathi Gachagua, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, and local leaders.
The opposition campaign emphasised community engagement, local networks and voter turnout across the constituency’s five wards.
On polling day, voters turned out in large numbers, with the IEBC reporting a 57 per cent voter turnout, equivalent to 41,656 votes cast out of 73,480 registered voters.
Election Conduct
The voting exercise was largely peaceful, although isolated incidents of disruption were reported.
The IEBC stated that polling officials addressed the reported incidents and maintained that the election was conducted transparently. The commission also urged the public to rely on official communication and warned against spreading unverified information during the tallying process.
Following the close of voting, results were counted at polling stations in the presence of party agents before being transmitted for constituency tallying.
Political Significance
The outcome has generated strong reactions across Kenya’s political landscape.
Supporters of DCP described the result as a demonstration of voter independence, while several opposition leaders argued it reflected growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling coalition.
Meanwhile, some government allies have called for a sober assessment of the outcome as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 General Election.
The Ol Kalou result is expected to feature prominently in national political discourse in the months ahead, particularly regarding party strength in the Mt. Kenya region.
