BUSIA, Kenya — Police in Busia County have intercepted a consignment of suspected illegal drugs during a routine patrol, in the latest enforcement operation targeting narcotics trafficking along the Kenyan-Ugandan border.
Officers from Mayenje Police Post made the recovery on Thursday, April 3, along the Mayenje, Bulanda Road after stopping a motorcycle suspected of transporting illicit goods, the National Police Service (NPS) said.
Suspects Flee
“While on patrol, officers identified and stopped a motorcycle suspected of transporting illegal substances. Upon noticing the police, both the rider and the pillion passenger abandoned the motorcycle and fled on foot,” the NPS said in a statement.
The suspects’ escape left behind the motorcycle and a load containing a substance believed to be cannabis sativa, neatly packaged in two separate consignments wrapped in yellow cello tape.
“A thorough search of the abandoned load led to the recovery of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa,” the statement added.
Police said the packaging suggested the drugs were intended for distribution.
Evidence Secured
All recovered items, including the motorcycle and suspected narcotics, have been secured at Busia Police Station for documentation and forensic analysis.
“All recovered exhibits have been secured for safe custody and further analysis, as investigations continue,” the NPS said.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, with police vowing to sustain enforcement efforts in the region.
“Investigations are ongoing as officers intensify efforts to trace and apprehend the suspects,” the statement added.
The operation forms part of broader law enforcement efforts to curb narcotics trafficking through Busia, a key transit point for drugs moving between Uganda and Kenyan coastal markets.
The county has seen sustained police activity targeting cross-border criminal networks exploiting porous border controls.
