LAMU, Kenya — The Port of Lamu is experiencing steady growth in vessel traffic and cargo volumes, prompting key players in the shipping and maritime industry to intensify efforts to position the facility as a major regional trade gateway.
During a stakeholder engagement held at the port, representatives from the Kenya Ships Agents Association (KSAA), shipping lines, and the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) agreed to strengthen joint marketing initiatives aimed at attracting more shipping business to Kenya’s second commercial seaport.
The meeting comes as the Port of Lamu continues to record improved operational performance, driven by enhanced efficiency, modern infrastructure, and its strategic location along key international shipping routes.
Speaking during the engagement, KSAA Chairman Roger Dainty praised the improvements made at the port, saying enhanced operational efficiency has significantly boosted vessel traffic.
According to the Kenya Ports Authority, the Port of Lamu has handled more than 120 vessel calls so far this year, marking a significant milestone in the facility’s growth since it began commercial operations.
Stakeholders attributed the increase to streamlined port operations, improved service delivery, and growing confidence among shipping companies using the port.
Meanwhile, KSAA Chief Executive Officer Elijah Mbaru emphasized the need for additional investment in supporting transport infrastructure, particularly road and railway links connecting the port to Kenya, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.
He noted that stronger regional connectivity would improve cargo movement, enhance the port’s competitiveness, and unlock greater trade opportunities within the East African region.
The Port of Lamu forms a key component of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor, a flagship regional infrastructure project aimed at expanding trade, improving logistics, and promoting economic integration across East Africa.
At the conclusion of the meeting, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to jointly market the Port of Lamu, expand its customer base, and strengthen its position as a strategic gateway for regional and international commerce.
