NAIROBI, Kenya – In a bid to maintain unity within Meru County, President William Ruto held a consultative meeting at State House, Nairobi, with key political figures from the region, including Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, Members of Parliament, and County Assembly representatives.
The discussions were centered on critical issues such as infrastructure development, improved returns for farmers of coffee, dairy, tea, avocado, and miraa, alongside security, health services, and affordable housing.
Ruto emphasized the importance of constant dialogue and unity among leaders, stating that a common vision is essential for meeting the needs of citizens and promoting national development.
Constant consultation and unity of purpose among leaders are crucial in our endeavour to work together for inclusive national development and shared prosperity. Additionally, when leaders have a common vision, they are able to meet the needs of citizens. Held a consultative
The meeting came just days after former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi led a significant delegation from Meru in officially aligning with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Linturi’s defection to Gachagua’s camp could undermine the efforts of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to consolidate his influence in the region.
Kindiki, who recently hosted Ruto on a tour of Mt. Kenya, had previously expressed hopes of including Linturi and former Meru Governor Peter Munya in a broad-based government.
However, Munya, in a surprising move, announced on April 23 that he intends to focus on reclaiming the Meru gubernatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 elections.
He dismissed any speculation about government appointments and reiterated that his only political ambition is the Meru governorship.
Munya’s decision leaves the region’s political future uncertain, as it remains unclear whether he will ally with Gachagua or remain within the Kenya Kwanza fold.
Gachagua’s growing influence, especially following Linturi’s defection, has further complicated the political landscape in Mt. Kenya East, where factions within the ruling coalition are now grappling for control ahead of the 2027 elections.
With the region’s power dynamics in flux, President Ruto’s meeting with Meru leaders highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining unity within the Mt. Kenya political bloc, as shifting allegiances and political maneuvering take center stage in the run-up to the next general elections.
