Ruto to Launch First National Ambulance Dispatch Centre in July

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto announced a series of measures to strengthen emergency medical services in Kenya, including increased support for St John Ambulance Kenya, expanded emergency healthcare funding, and the establishment of a national ambulance dispatch system.

Speaking during the 95th St John Ambulance Annual Parade and Inspection at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto praised the organisation’s volunteers for their contribution to emergency response and community service across the country.

The President noted that St John Ambulance’s more than 62,000 volunteers often serve as first responders during accidents, disasters, and medical emergencies, providing critical assistance before patients reach healthcare facilities.

“As first responders, St John Ambulance volunteers are often the first people on the scene when accidents and other disasters strike. The 62,000 volunteers play an indispensable role in easing victims’ pain,” Ruto said.

National Ambulance Dispatch Centre Planned

To improve emergency response times, the President announced plans to establish a National Ambulance Dispatch Centre in Nairobi.

According to Ruto, the facility will coordinate ambulance operations nationwide to ensure quicker response during emergencies.

“The service will be free for every Kenyan,” he said.

The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to strengthen emergency healthcare systems under the country’s broader Universal Health Coverage agenda.

Government to Cover Emergency Care Costs

The President also revealed that the government has increased funding for the Emergency, Chronic, and Critical Illness Fund under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

As a result, the government will cover emergency evacuation and treatment costs for all Kenyans during the first 24 hours following a medical emergency.

The move is expected to reduce financial barriers that often prevent patients from accessing urgent medical care.

Land, Funding, and Ambulances for St John Ambulance

Ruto further announced a package of support measures for St John Ambulance aimed at strengthening its operational capacity.

The government has allocated land in Nairobi for the organisation and engaged Parliament to acquire the current St John Ambulance offices located next to the Legislature at a cost of Sh300 million.

According to the President, the arrangement will allow the organisation to construct a modern national headquarters.

In addition, the government will provide Sh200 million towards the construction of new offices.

To bolster emergency response services, Ruto said the government will also purchase 15 new ambulances for St John Ambulance and register them under SHA.

Youth Mentorship and Community Service

Beyond emergency response, the President commended the organisation’s role in mentoring young people and promoting civic responsibility.

He said St John Ambulance continues to play an important role in building discipline among youth and supporting vulnerable communities through volunteer service programmes.
