Salah Named Egypt Captain as 27-Man World Cup Squad Announced

Date:

CAIRO, Egypt — Mohamed Salah is set to captain Egypt at the upcoming World Cup after being named in a preliminary 27-man squad that blends experienced internationals with emerging young talent ahead of the expanded tournament in North America.

The 33-year-old forward, who is expected to leave Liverpool at the end of the season after nine years, remains Egypt’s most influential player with 67 goals in 115 international appearances. His leadership is expected to anchor the team’s campaign.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan included several Europe-based and domestic players as he shaped the provisional squad ahead of final selection, which must be reduced to 26 players in line with FIFA regulations.

The squad also features Omar Marmoush of Manchester City and uncapped 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim, who is currently with Barcelona Under-19.

However, experienced striker Mostafa Mohamed, who plays for Nantes, has been left out of the preliminary selection, marking a notable omission in Egypt’s attacking options.

Final cut after the Russia friendly

Egypt will trim the squad to 26 players after a scheduled friendly against Russia in Cairo on May 28, a match expected to serve as the final assessment for fringe players fighting for inclusion in the World Cup squad.

The team will then continue preparations with an international friendly against Brazil in Cleveland on June 6, a high-profile test against one of the tournament favourites.

World Cup group challenge

Egypt has been drawn in Group G at the tournament, where they will face Belgium on June 15, New Zealand on June 22, and Iran on June 27. The competition will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19 under the expanded 48-team format.

Football analysts say Egypt’s group presents a mixed challenge, with Belgium posing the toughest test due to its depth and experience, while matches against New Zealand and Iran could prove decisive in determining progression.

The 33-year-old forward, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after nine years, has scored 67 goals in 115 appearances for Egypt.

Squad blend of youth and experience

The provisional squad includes a strong domestic core, particularly from Al Ahly and Zamalek, alongside Europe-based professionals.

Egypt’s midfield features several established names expected to play key roles in controlling tempo and transition play, while the defensive line includes a mix of local league stalwarts and foreign-based defenders.

In attack, much of Egypt’s hopes will rest on Salah’s leadership and finishing ability, supported by Marmoush and a younger generation of forwards aiming to make their mark on the global stage.

Expectations and pressure

Egypt enters the tournament under heightened expectations, with Salah’s leadership seen as central to the team’s chances of advancing beyond the group stage. The forward’s form and fitness will be closely monitored as the squad finalises preparations.

The expanded World Cup format has raised hopes among African nations, offering more qualification pathways and greater representation on the global stage.

Egypt will be aiming to translate its experienced core and emerging talent into a competitive run, with final squad adjustments expected after the Russia friendly.
