NAIROBI, Kenya – Spotify is introducing a new system that will tell listeners when an artist profile represents an AI-generated identity, as the streaming platform responds to growing concerns over synthetic musicians being presented as real people.
The company announced its new AI Persona badges on August 11, 2026, with the labels expected to begin appearing on artist profiles in mid-September.
The move will target artist identities created using artificial intelligence, particularly profiles that use photorealistic, AI-generated human characters to present themselves as performers.
Spotify said the initiative aims to give listeners greater transparency as artificial intelligence increasingly enters the music industry. The platform will place the badge on profiles it identifies as AI Personas and will also allow artists and creators to voluntarily disclose their use of AI.
An AI Persona refers to an artist identity created or represented using artificial intelligence rather than an actual human performer. The distinction matters because Spotify is not banning music made with AI.
A real musician can use AI tools to help write lyrics, produce music, create artwork or modify vocals and still remain a human artist. Spotify’s new policy instead focuses on cases where the artist identity itself is synthetic.
In simple terms, listeners may be listening to an AI-generated singer, represented by an AI-generated face and biography, without initially realizing that the person does not exist. The new badge will help make that distinction visible.
Spotify plans to make the labels visible in several parts of its platform.
Listeners will be able to see an AI Persona badge on an artist’s main profile, within the profile’s About section, in search results and alongside individual tracks in playlists. Users who tap the badge will be able to see additional information about why the profile received the designation.
Spotify will distinguish between profiles that voluntarily identified themselves as AI Personas and those that Spotify identified following its own review. The company expects the system to become another layer of transparency as AI-generated music and virtual performers become more common.
The new label will also have consequences beyond simply informing listeners. Music from artists identified as AI Personas will not be eligible for Spotify’s editorial playlists. The tracks will also be excluded from personalized algorithmic recommendations such as Discover Weekly and Release Radar.
However, Spotify will still allow listeners to find and play the music if they deliberately follow the AI Persona’s profile.
This means Spotify is not removing AI Personas from the platform altogether. Instead, the company is limiting the ways in which the platform’s recommendation systems can introduce them to listeners.
The approach gives users the ability to listen to AI-generated artists while reducing the possibility that they will encounter synthetic performers without knowing it.
The company plans to combine human moderation with AI-powered investigative tools to identify profiles that may represent synthetic identities. The initial reviews will focus on high-traffic profiles that meet specific audience thresholds.
Listeners will also eventually be able to report artist profiles they believe represent AI-generated personas. Spotify’s review process will then determine whether the profile qualifies for the designation.
Artists who receive a “Likely AI Persona” label following Spotify’s investigation will be notified. They will have an opportunity to self-disclose their AI status or appeal the decision.
That process is intended to prevent legitimate artists from being incorrectly categorized as artificial performers.
The platform already has other systems designed to provide information about AI involvement in music production, including AI Credits and SongDNA
