Weather Alert: Kenya Met Warns of Rain, Cold Nights and Hot Days Starting This Weekend

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyans should brace for fluctuating weather conditions starting this weekend, with a combination of rainfall, cold nights, and high daytime temperatures expected across various regions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department’s latest five-day forecast, covering the period from Friday, May 2, to Tuesday, May 6, 2025, predicts active weather patterns.

David Gikungu, Director General of the Kenya Met Department, indicated that moderate rainfall will affect several regions, including the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands East of the Rift Valley, South Eastern Lowlands, Western Kenya, and the Coastal region.

Morning showers are anticipated in areas such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, with thunderstorms expected in the afternoon and evening.

Western and Rift Valley counties, including Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu, will also experience similar weather patterns, with sunny mornings followed by showers and thunderstorms.

Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal parts of Tana River County are expected to receive heavy rainfall over the weekend as the long rains reach their peak.

Gikungu emphasized the heightened risk of waterborne diseases during this period.

The forecast also highlights a stark contrast in temperatures across regions.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, are expected to experience cold nights with temperatures dropping as low as 10°C.

In contrast, coastal, northeastern, and northwestern regions, as well as some parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, will experience daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C.

With varying weather conditions expected, the Kenya Met Department urged residents to stay updated on forecasts and take appropriate precautions to ensure their safety.
