NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) held its 2nd Edition Expo and Conference, a three-day event aimed at advancing the utility of space technologies to support national socioeconomic development and address societal challenges.
Themed “Space Technologies for Societal Benefits,” the conference sought to demystify space science and make its applications relevant to everyday citizens.
Space Technologies: A Pillar for National Development
Speaking at the event, Cabinet Secretary for Defence Adan Duale underscored the significance of space technology in supporting key sectors of Kenya’s economy, including communication, the digital economy, agriculture, and food security.
“Space technology enables environmental monitoring and facilitates mitigation against contemporary threats to human security and public safety, such as climate change, natural disasters, famine, and drought,” Duale emphasized.
Duale assured attendees that the Kenyan government is committed to the national space program, investing necessary resources to ensure economic, technological, and geopolitical benefits. He noted,
Collaboration and Capacity Building
Collaboration has been a cornerstone of Kenya’s space endeavors. Duale highlighted ongoing partnerships with other countries to develop indigenous space systems and enhance the utilization of space services for economic development.
This collaboration has facilitated the sharing of best practices and innovations in capacity building, leading to the creation of a national space policy and legislative framework.
Kenya Space Agency Director General Brigadier Hillary Kipkosgei emphasized the importance of the conference in raising awareness and elevating conversations around space exploration to a national level.
“Space technology has become so pervasive in our daily lives, yet many take it for granted. This expo aims to simplify the subject and demonstrate its utility and benefits,” Kipkosgei stated.
The conference featured sessions designed to inspire and mentor the younger generation, unlock the potential of the private sector, and provide opportunities for women in the space and STEM sectors.
