U.S. Embassy Launches Freedom 250 Tour at JKUAT With Drones, AI and Career Mentorship

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The United States Embassy in Kenya has launched the Freedom 250 Festival Tour at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), bringing together technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, sports and career mentorship in a nationwide initiative targeting thousands of university students.

The festival, unveiled on Friday, marks the beginning of a multi-campus tour that will culminate in celebrations on July 4, ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Organizers expect more than 6,000 students to participate in the immersive experience, which is designed to expose young people to emerging technologies, educational opportunities and professional development pathways.

Speaking during the launch, U.S. Embassy Acting Public Affairs Officer Drew Giblin said the initiative seeks to empower Kenyan youth through practical experiences and meaningful engagement.

“JKUAT represents the energy and innovation shaping Kenya’s future. This tour is about giving young people opportunities to explore ideas, build skills, and connect with technology and mentorship in exciting ways,” Giblin said.

The event transformed sections of the university into interactive experience zones where students engaged with robotics, artificial intelligence demonstrations, drone racing competitions, flight simulators and virtual reality tours of American universities.

Participants also accessed entrepreneurship clinics, CV-writing workshops, podcasting sessions, esports competitions, sports activities and creative arts exhibitions.

According to the U.S. Embassy, the festival combines education and entertainment while creating opportunities for students to interact with industry professionals, innovators and mentors.

Students are also expected to compete in a series of challenges and contests throughout the tour, with winners receiving prizes including technology gadgets, staycations and creative development packages.

The Freedom 250 Tour will continue at several institutions across the country, including Machakos University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and the University of Nairobi.

The final event is scheduled for July 4, coinciding with America’s Independence Day celebrations.

The U.S. Embassy said the initiative aims to strengthen people-to-people ties between Kenya and the United States while promoting innovation, creativity and collaboration among young people.

The program comes at a time when universities are increasingly embracing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and digital entrepreneurship as key drivers of future employment and economic growth.

Organizers say the tour will provide students with opportunities to explore career possibilities, expand their networks and gain practical exposure to technologies shaping the future workforce.

By bringing innovation directly to campuses, the embassy hopes to inspire the next generation of Kenyan innovators, entrepreneurs and technology leaders while deepening educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
