NAIROBI, Kenya – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called on its members to support the ongoing national dialogue spearheaded by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
This call for unity comes in the wake of recent legislative progress and the pressing need to address youth issues and other significant challenges facing the country.
In a press release issued today, ODM emphasized the importance of structured and coordinated discussions to tackle the emerging issues affecting Kenyans.
This comes after President Ruto signed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was influenced by the persistence of ODM’s protests against the Finance Bill last year.
ODM National Chairman John Mbadi highlighted the necessity of aligning with Raila Odinga’s call for a national conversation.
He stressed that this approach would ensure accountability and the realization of agreed-upon issues within set timelines.
“We are in agreement that this call is in the best interest of the country and will help address the emerging issues in a structured and coordinated manner,” Mbadi stated. “His proposal will ensure accountability, including timelines within which the issues agreed on must be realized.”
Last year, ODM’s protests against the Finance Bill led to significant legislative achievements despite the tragic loss of 75 lives during the demonstrations.
These protests, which aimed to combat the high cost of living, were marked by resilience and determination.
ODM members, including Raila Odinga, faced severe threats, yet their persistence resulted in the recent electoral reforms.
The signing of the new bill was seen as a tribute to those who lost their lives during the protests.
ODM believes that Raila Odinga’s call for national dialogue honors their memory and paves the way for a more inclusive and responsive governance structure.
Mbadi addressed the criticism from detractors, reaffirming ODM’s readiness to engage in protests if necessary but emphasizing the importance of strategic retreat and advancement for the country’s sake.
He reminded party members of their historical commitment to fighting for justice and urged them to support Raila Odinga’s current call for a national conversation.
