NAIROBI, Kenya- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations Homicide Directorate has officially taken over investigations into the brutal murder of gospel artist Rachel Wandeto, who died after suffering severe burn injuries following a horrific attack in Mwiki, Kasarani.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the DCI said specialised homicide detectives had launched investigations into the killing, describing it as a heinous crime that shocked the nation.
According to preliminary investigations, Rachel Wandeto was attacked on the night of May 16, 2026 while walking home along 11th Street near Obama Road in Mwiki, within Kasarani.
Investigators say she encountered a group of three men who allegedly assaulted her before dousing her with a flammable liquid and setting her on fire.
“The assailants reportedly assaulted her, doused her with a flammable liquid, and then set her on fire before fleeing the scene,” the DCI said.
The gospel singer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital with approximately 75 per cent burn injuries and remained admitted in critical condition for days before succumbing to her injuries on May 18 while undergoing treatment.
The murder has sparked outrage online and renewed calls for stronger protection of women amid rising cases of gender-based violence and brutal attacks targeting women across the country.
The DCI said detectives are pursuing all leads to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and identify everyone involved in planning and executing the crime.
“Detectives are tirelessly working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this heinous crime and to identify and apprehend all individuals involved,” the agency said.
The investigative agency urged members of the public with information that could assist in the probe to report to the nearest police station or anonymously through its toll-free hotline and WhatsApp channels.
The DCI also extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, assuring the public that investigations would be conducted thoroughly and impartially.
Wandeto’s death has continued to draw condemnation from leaders, activists and human rights organisations, with many demanding swift justice for the slain gospel artist.
