NAIROBI, Kenya – Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has made it clear: He’s open to a sit-down with President William Ruto—but only to discuss the appointment of the next chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Beyond that? No political handshake, no cooperation, and certainly no alliance.
Speaking at a book launch in Nairobi, Kalonzo dismissed swirling rumors suggesting he was warming up to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“People should not panic or claim that Kalonzo has gone to State House,” he said while attending the unveiling of Moving Beyond Limitation, a book by Gladys Muthui at the Gospel Outreach Church, Joska Transformation Centre.

No Political Deals, Just Electoral Talks
While the former vice president remains firm on his 2027 presidential ambitions, he acknowledged that discussions on the IEBC leadership are necessary for a fair electoral process.
“If it’s about meeting Ruto to agree on who should be the next IEBC chairperson, then I am ready for that meeting,” Kalonzo stated.
His stance comes as the selection panel for the IEBC chairperson and commissioners prepares to kick off interviews, scheduled to begin Monday, March 17.
The process is crucial, given the commission’s role in ensuring credible elections, and Kalonzo appears keen on influencing the selection to avoid what he has previously termed “irregularities in electoral management.”
2027 Elections: Kalonzo’s Endgame
Kalonzo made it clear that his focus remains on the next general election, telling Kenyans to prepare for a leadership change.
“The next time I meet Ruto will be when he is handing over power, just like Uhuru did,” he asserted.
We will meet with Ruto in 2027 when he is handing over the instruments of power – Kalonzo Musyoka.
His remarks come amid shifting political alliances, with opposition figures—including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—seeking strategic partnerships ahead of 2027.
Kalonzo has also been vocal in criticizing ODM leader Raila Odinga’s recent cooperation deal with Ruto, labeling it a betrayal of opposition unity.
Meanwhile, the IEBC selection panel has released the interview schedule for the shortlisted candidates.
Notable names in the race include Charles Nyachae, Anne Amadi, and Abdulqadir Lorot H. Ramadhan, with the process set to conclude on March 26 at the College of Insurance in Nairobi.
As political realignments continue to shake up the landscape, Kalonzo’s stance signals that he is charting his own course—one that avoids entanglement with the ruling coalition but keeps him actively engaged in shaping the electoral process.
Whether his strategy pays off in 2027 remains to be seen, but for now, he’s making it clear: He’s not walking into State House unless it’s to take the keys
