Chaos Erupts at KIFWA Mombasa Elections as New Officials Announced

Date:

MOMBASA, Kenya — Proceedings at the Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA) Mombasa branch elections turned chaotic after violence erupted during the announcement of results at the Annual General Meeting held at Bandari Maritime Academy.

The disruption occurred after about 385 members had cast their ballots, with tensions flaring as returning officers prepared to declare winners. Newly elected chairperson Leonard Njiru said the situation escalated when a group of aggrieved candidates interfered with the process.

“A section of the candidates switched off the returning officer’s microphone, which triggered a confrontation,” Njiru said.

One member sustained injuries during the fracas, while property, including a laptop and a mobile phone, was destroyed. The incident was reported to police as officials moved to restore order and complete the electoral process.

Despite the disturbance, the association proceeded to confirm a new leadership team. Njiru was elected chairperson and will be deputised by vice chairperson Mary June Oyare. Clement Ngala was elected secretary, while Wycliffe Adel will serve as treasurer.

Other board members elected include David Mwiti, Dennis Master Kimatu, Agnes Kalekye, Mary Mwaniki, and Roy Mwanthi.

Observers from the Law Society of Kenya and the Registrar of Societies’ office, represented by Teresia Nyadagu, endorsed the outcome, stating that the voting process met legal requirements despite the disruption.

The elections also marked a shift in leadership tenure after members ratified constitutional amendments in December 2025, extending terms from one year to three years. Officials said the change is intended to enhance continuity and stability in the association’s operations.

Vice chairperson-elect Mary June Oyare urged members to close ranks following the tense exercise.

“We must accept the outcome of the election and work together for the good of the association and the industry,” she said.

The new officials assume office amid calls to strengthen the freight and logistics sector, which plays a key role in port operations and regional trade. Stakeholders have urged the incoming leadership to prioritise operational efficiency, member welfare and engagement with regulators as the industry navigates evolving shipping and warehousing demands.
