MOMBASA, Kenya — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested two suspects and seized 250 kilograms of cannabis in a coordinated anti-narcotics operation in Mombasa County.
According to the DCI, officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) carried out the operation following intelligence leads that led them to a suspected trafficker in the Port Reitz area of Changamwe.
The first suspect, identified as Tito Paul Mulu, 43, was arrested at his residence, with investigators saying his capture exposed a wider trafficking network.
The probe then led detectives to a second suspect, 23-year-old Oliver Ochieng, who was tracked down in the Mudengereni area of Kisauni.
Police said Ochieng later directed officers to his rented house, where detectives recovered two sacks containing cannabis sativa believed to be intended for distribution.
“The operation underscores ANU’s commitment to smoke out traffickers and dismantle drug networks,” the DCI said in a statement, adding that the suspects are in custody awaiting arraignment.
The seized drugs have been secured as exhibits in the case, as investigators prepare files for prosecution under Kenya’s anti-narcotics laws.
The arrests come amid intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb drug trafficking along the Coast region, which has long been identified as a key transit and distribution corridor due to its proximity to international shipping routes.
Authorities have, in recent years, ramped up surveillance and intelligence-led operations targeting supply chains and local distribution networks.
Officials say such crackdowns are part of broader efforts to protect communities from the social and economic harm linked to drug abuse.
Security agencies have urged members of the public to continue sharing information to support ongoing operations, noting that community cooperation remains critical in tackling organised drug networks.
The suspects are expected to be presented in court in the coming days as investigations continue into the matter.
