Summary
- Orange Democratic Movement condemns Sh4.8B fuel scandal, demands accountability
- Party warns against politicising investigations or targeting non-accounting officers
- Calls for full recovery of public funds and transparent judicial process
NAIROBI, Kenya- The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has broken its silence on the Sh4.8 billion fuel procurement scandal, expressing “profound outrage” over alleged misuse of public resources.
In a statement signed by party leader Oburu Oginga, ODM said the scandal reflects a troubling culture of impunity at a time when Kenyans are grappling with a high cost of living.
ODM backs probe but demands accountability across the board
The party commended investigative agencies and President William Ruto for moving swiftly to launch investigations.
ODM said the response signals the end of complacency in the fight against corruption.
“Every public officer found culpable… must be held fully accountable,” the statement said.
The party stressed that anti-corruption efforts must be impartial and non-selective, regardless of rank or political affiliation.
Party defends CSs amid claims of political targeting
ODM raised concern over what it termed as “public lynching” of Cabinet Secretaries.
It specifically defended Lee Kinyanjui and Opiyo Wandayi, arguing they are not accounting officers in the fuel procurement process.
The party warned that targeting individuals without professional evidence risks politicising the investigations.
However, it maintained that if investigations implicate any official, “there must be no sacred cows.”
Focus shifts to recovery of funds and transparency
ODM reaffirmed that fighting corruption remains central to its agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) under a 10-point agenda signed in March 2026.
The party is now pushing for:
- Full recovery of any lost public funds
- Transparency in the judicial process
- Justice for Kenyans affected by rising fuel costs
The scandal, linked to the importation of substandard fuel outside the government-to-government framework, continues to unfold as more officials face scrutiny.
