NAIROBI, Kenya — The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, on Tuesday hosted the National Police Service (NPS) athletics team at Jogoo House ‘A’, where the athletes presented trophies they had won at the recent AK/Betika National Cross Country Championships.
During the ceremony, IG Kanja congratulated the team for emerging as the best among 19 participating teams, hailing their triumph as a testament to discipline, commitment, and excellence within the Service.
Eleven NPS athletes were selected to represent Kenya at the upcoming World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, in January 2026.
“The athletes have once again brought honour and pride to the National Police Service. Their exemplary performance reflects the Service’s values of discipline, teamwork, and integrity,” IG Kanja said.
He described sports as a key bridge between the Service and the public, fostering unity, community engagement, and national pride.
The IG urged athletes to remain role models both on and off the field, noting that success in athletics mirrors the Service’s broader pursuit of professionalism and integrity.
“Sport is not only a unifying force within the Service but also an important link between police officers and the communities they serve,” he added. “We must continue nurturing this talent and building a vibrant, inclusive sporting culture that promotes teamwork and national cohesion.”
Mr. Kanja reaffirmed the NPS’s commitment to supporting athletes through structured training, mentorship, and welfare initiatives, saying the Service aims to sustain Kenya’s dominance in athletics through continuous development and investment in sports programs.
The event was attended by senior police officers, including the Principal Assistant to the Inspector General, Mr. Mathew Kutoh, SAIG; the Chairman of the NPS Athletics Committee, Mr. Francis Ndiema, SAIG; and the Director of Corporate Communications and NPS Spokesperson, Mr. Muchiri Nyaga, AIG. Also present were members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), among them Ms. Eunice Dobby, CP; Mr. Joseph Chirchir, CP; and Mr. Isaac Sang, CP.
The NPS athletics team has a long-standing tradition of producing elite runners who have represented Kenya on global stages, contributing to the country’s rich legacy in long-distance running. This latest success further strengthens the Service’s reputation as a key pillar in nurturing athletic talent and promoting national unity through sport.
